MC Equestrian Team Excels in Texas Competition
Mississippi College's stellar equestrian team tied for team high point champion during recent competition in Texas. Knotted up against University of Texas and Louisiana State University, MC riders excelled on day two of the competition at Rice University in early February.

Matthews Named MC Merit Health Athletes of the Week
Matthews (Bogue Chitto, Miss.) posted another impressive week on the hardwood. Matthews averaged 18 points while shooting 41.7 percent from the field, including a clip of 46.7 from behind the arc, and 81.8 percent from the free throw line. She scored a career-high and roster-best 24 points in the setback at West Florida. It's her third 20-point, scoring effort of the season. She totaled 12 points in the upset at Valdosta State on Thursday. She finished the week with four rebounds, 11 assists and two steals over the course of the two games.

Matthews Sets a Career High
Senior Zariah Matthews recorded a career-high in scoring. Matthews led the team with 24 points and surpassed her previous best of 22 set against West Georgia on Jan. 2, 2020. Shanell Kitchens added 12 points while Coco Hobson chimed in 11. Mikeba Jones grabbed a roster-best nine rebounds while Kaitlyn Thomson pulled down eight.

#5 Lady Choctaws Have Streak Snapped in GSC Semis
The Mississippi College women's soccer team had their 15-match winning streak snapped with a 1-0 loss to Lee University on Friday evening in the Gulf South Conference Semifinals at Ashton Brosnaham Park. The #5 Lady Choctaws (15-2) suffered their first defeat since the season-opener against Saint Leo (0-1) on September 6th. The Flames advance to face Montevallo for the GSC Championship on Sunday. HOW IT HAPPENED - Neither team was able to get many solid chances together in the early going until the Flames' Kelsey Yoder got behind the MC defense for the eventual game-winner in the 21st minute on an assist from Kate Dirkse. - The Lady Choctaws would put five shots on goal in the first half, but Lee would take the 1-0 lead into the break. - In the second half, both teams put together solid defensive efforts to keep the game scoreless over 45 minutes. - Senior Emma Claire Furman had an opportunity in the box in the 87th minute, but Taylor Green made the save for the Flames to keep the shutout. KEY STATS - The Lady Choctaws put up 11 shots with five coming on goal, while the Flames had seven shots with three on goal. - Senior Katie Taylor and freshman Erin Hederman led MC with three shots apiece, while Furman had a pair of shots on goal. - Riley Henry led all players with four shots for Lee. - Senior Gabby Kayser made two saves over 90 minutes for the Lady Choctaws, while Green made all five saves for the Flames. MATCH NOTES - MC is now 3-6-1 all-time against the Flames. - The teams have split their meetings over the last two seasons with MC winning the regular season contest and falling in tournament play.

The Mississippi College women's basketball team dropped an 84-62 decision at the University of Montevallo on Monday, Nov. 25. MC moved to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in Gulf South Conference action. UM improved to 5-1 and 2-0 in the league.

Campbell Sets Two School Records; Indoor Track and Field Opens Season
Madeline Campbell broke the program's indoor 3,000-meters and mile records at the Invite. Campbell reset her previously-held mark in the 3K with a time of 10:31.15 and a fifth place finish. She toppled the mile record with a time of 5:22.09 along with a fourth place finish. Former Lady Choctaw Abbie Easter held the program record in the mile with a time of 5:24.36 set in December 2016.

Volleyball Sets Sights on GSC Tournament
The Mississippi College volleyball team fell in straight sets at Valdosta State University on Saturday, Nov. 16. The setback places MC as the No. 8 seed in the Gulf South Conference Tournament next weekend in Pensacola, Fla., and the campus of the University of West Florida. The tournament berth is the first for the program since 2009, when the Navy and Gold made the American Southwest Conference field. The appearance is the first for the Choctaws in the GSC Tournament since 1994. Jamie Boros reached double figure kills as she totaled a team-best 10 in the contest. Lexie Laurendine and Kendall Platt each added eight to finish tied for second on the team. Levi Lennard led the way with a roster-best 20 assists while Laurendine added 16 assists. Defensively, a trio of Choctaws notched double-digit digs in the outing led by Julia Martin's 12. Platt added 11 while Laurendine recorded 10. Kate Bass registered three blocks followed by Autumn Frost and Lexi Richards with two apiece. Trailing 9-7, VSU used a 5-0 run to grab a 12-9 lead. MC knotted the contest at 12-all behind a Frost kill, but the Red and Black responded with three straight points and never trailed the remainder of the set, en route to a 25-19 win. - The Blazers jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the second set and extended the lead to 16-11 as it claimed a 25-19 victory and took a 2-0 lead in the match. - The Choctaws battled back from an 18-11 deficit to take a 22-21 lead in the third. The Blazers lined up for match-point at 24-22, but the Navy and Gold fought off VSU to hold a 25-24 lead. The two teams exchanged a couple different lead changes, but a Boros kill placed MC up 28-27 with set-point. However, a pair of Blazer kills placed the Red and Black up 29-28 and a MC attack error sealed the match with a 30-28, third-set outcome. INSIDE THE BOX - Boros notched her 23rd contest this season with double-digit kills and 38th career. - Lexie Laurendine recorded her 11th double-double of the season and 16th of her career. - The 20-assist performance marked the second of the season for Levi Lennard. She's tallied 15-plus assists in the last three contests and 20-plus in two of the last three.

Hawthorn Named GSC Defensive Player of the Week
Senior defensive back Derric Hawthorn has been named Gulf South Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday (Nov. 18). Hawthorn (Collins, Miss.) helped lead the Choctaws to a 37-13 victory over Delta State on Saturday afternoon, bringing the Heritage Bell Trophy back to Clinton for the first time since 1993. The Jones County JC transfer racked up 14 tackles, including 12 solo stops and 2.0 tackles for loss in the victory. He also forced, recovered and returned a fumble 97 yards for a touchdown to give MC a 37-6 lead in the third quarter. On the season, Hawthorn led the team with 59 tackles, including 45 solo stops. He also scored three defensive touchdowns, taking two interceptions back for scores along with the fumble return. This is the second time Hawthorn has been named GSC Defensive Player of the Week, picking up the honor on October 22nd last season after his performance against Shorter. Hawthorn and the Choctaws became the first team since 1988 to finish the season with a perfect record at home, going 5-0 at Robinson-Hale Stadium in 2019.

Lady Choctaws Close out Season in NCAA Tournament Second Round
The Mississippi College women's soccer team was eliminated from the 2019 NCAA Division II Tournament with a 5-1 second round loss to Nova Southeastern on Sunday afternoon at Harper Davis Field on the campus of Millsaps College. The Lady Choctaws finished the season at 15-3, setting a school record with 15 straight wins earlier in the season. The Sharks are now 15-4-2 and will advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen" where they will face Embry-Riddle on December 5th.
